What is the term for the shedding of the endometrium from the uterus?

Menstruation is the term that describes the shedding of the endometrial lining from the uterus. This process occurs as a part of the menstrual cycle, typically on a monthly basis, when a fertilized egg does not implant in the uterine lining. As a result, the thickened endometrial layer, built up to support a potential pregnancy, is expelled through the vagina along with blood and other fluids, which constitutes the menstrual flow.

Ovulation refers to the release of an egg from the ovary, cycling describes the overall process of the menstrual cycle, and fertilization is the union of sperm and egg that occurs if intercourse happens around the time of ovulation. None of these terms accurately describe the act of shedding the endometrial lining.
